The Digital Bank Race in Malaysia

If you follow the Malaysian fintech scene, you know one story has dominated the headlines for the past year: the launch of the new digital banks. And in that race, one brand has been the undeniable “main character”: GXBank.

Backed by Grab, its launch was loud, its marketing was aggressive, and it seemed to be everywhere. But is all that noise good news?

We decided to use Mediapod to find out. We analyzed a full 12 months of public data (Nov 2024 – Oct 2025) from Google News and Reddit to see what the real story was.

What we found is a classic “leaky bucket” problem.

Part 1: The “Win” – GXBank is Sucking Up All the Oxygen

First, we looked at Share of Voice. When it comes to the public conversation, it’s not even a fair fight.

GXBank is the undisputed champion of awareness. With 58 public mentions, it has generated more conversation than all its new digital bank competitors combined.

The Digital Bank Race in Malaysia: Share of Voice

This is a huge marketing win. Their strategy of leveraging the Grab ecosystem has worked. They are the brand everyone is talking about. But here’s the twist…

Part 2: The “Leak” – 50% of the Conversation is Negative

When we ran this data through our Deep Emotion Analysis engine, the story got complicated.

GXBank’s overall average sentiment score is -0.07. While this is technically in the “Neutral” range (from -0.1 to +0.1), that number hides a huge problem.

When we looked closer, we found that a full 50% (29 of the 58 mentions) of the conversation about GXBank was negative.

This is the “leaky bucket.” For every two people talking about the brand, one is saying something negative. This 50/50 split is dragging their average score down, giving them the lowest sentiment of the entire digital bank group. In sharp contrast, their competitors like AEON Bank (+0.02) and Ryt Bank (0.00) are launching with a much cleaner, more positive reputation.

Part 3: The “Why” – It’s a Matter of Trust

So, why are half the conversations about GXBank so negative?

Our AI-driven Topic Analysis shows the usual suspects: Fees & Charges, App Performance, and Value & Rewards were the biggest drivers of the negative conversation. These are standard complaints for any new bank.

But the real, alarming insight came from the theme of the most negative posts. This wasn’t just mild complaints about app slowness. We found multiple, highly-discussed threads with alarming titles like “PSA: Avoid GXBank, your money is not safe” and “Unauthorised transactions using GX bank card,” showing that this is a key reputational challenge for the new bank.

This data suggests the core issue for GXBank isn’t just about features; it’s about a fundamental gap in trust and security.

Conclusion: Data vs. Real Intelligence

This is the difference between simple data and true intelligence.

  • Simple Data says: “GXBank is winning! Look at all the mentions!”
  • Real Intelligence says: “GXBank has a serious trust issue that it needs to fix, fast. Its competitors, while quieter, are building a much healthier brand reputation.”

One is a vanity metric; the other is an actionable, strategic insight.
