The "Wet Food" Shift

For decades, Dry Food (Kibble/Biskut) was the undisputed king of the Malaysian pet market. It was cheap, convenient, and didn’t spoil in the tropical heat.

But in 2025, the sentiment shifted.

We analyzed over 4,400 food-related conversations to map the dietary trends of Malaysian cats. The data reveals that “Kibble” is rapidly losing its reputation, while Wet Food is exploding—driven not by nutrition, but by fear.

The “Kibble Guilt”

MY Cat Economy 2026: Diet Types

The data shows a decisive split in Share of Voice.

  • Wet Food & Soups: 62% of diet-related mentions.
  • Dry Food (Kibble): 38% of diet-related mentions.

What is driving this 2:1 gap? “Kibble Guilt.” In community discussions, feeding only dry food is increasingly framed as “lazy” or “risky.” Owners frequently post asking for “Wet Food recipes” or “Toppers” to make their dry food safer.

The “Batu Karang” Panic

The catalyst for this shift is a single, terrifying keyword: “Batu Karang” (Kidney Stones/UTI).

This specific health fear has permeated the Malay-speaking pet community.

  • Mentions of “Batu Karang” appear in 1 out of every 3 discussions regarding Dry Food brands.
  • There is a widespread belief (fueled by viral TikTok vet videos) that “Salty Kibble” is the primary cause of death for male cats (especially Oyens).

The Rise of “Soup” Culture

This anxiety has birthed a new category: “Hydration Entertainment.”

It is no longer enough to just feed a cat; you must hydrate them. We are seeing a surge in keywords like “Cat Soup,” “Broth,” and “Tumis” (home-cooked wet food). Brands that offer “High Moisture” content—like liquid treats (Churu) or pouches—are being used as “Health Insurance” to prevent kidney issues.

Conclusion: Sell Hydration, Not Just Ingredients

The implication for brands is clear. If you are selling Dry Food in 2026, you are fighting a reputation war. To win, you must address the “Batu Karang” elephant in the room. Highlight “Urinary Care” and “Low Sodium” on your packaging.

If you are selling Wet Food, the opportunity is massive. You aren’t just selling a meal; you are selling peace of mind.
